igus presented honeycomb strain relief

At the 2017 Motek tradeshow, igus presented a new and unique strain relief for its e-chain cable carriers: the honeycomb strain relief CFU.

The strain-relief system replaces commonly used cable tie-wraps and other strain-relief designs.

The older version of the strain relief required users to arrange each cable separately in the energy chain.

In the new version, cables and hoses are simply inserted into the honeycomb and then closed.

As a result, the outer walls of the honeycomb cavities lie gently and uniformly around the cables.

The honeycomb system can be assembled in seconds and, according to igus officials, it is also extremely flexible allowing new cables to be inserted or replaced by hand.

The newly improved CFU combines a compact design and allows for simple and flexible filling. With this new CFU, users can reportedly reduce assembly and engineering time by about 80%

Due to the flush finish with the e-chain mounting bracket, the new CFU can be used in both unsupported and gliding applications. The design allows for easy scaling for individual chain widths.

Cables are simply inserted into the vertical rows of the CFU, the system is closed and then screwed at the top.
Optional clips at the side plates connect energy chain and strain relief.

With the strain-relief system, engineers can schedule the chain and strain relief before they know the exact cable assignment. This can also be easily changed in the later stages of a design.

The system is currently being developed for the E4.1L chain.

Together with the new separator system for a custom-made interior separation, said company officials, the honeycomb strain relief makes the E4.1L the easiest to fill e-chain on the market.
