HUBER+SUHNER has developed a cooled charging cable with a cooled connector

HUBER+SUHNER, the leading global manufacturer of components and systems for electrical and optical connectivity, has developed a cooled charging cable with a cooled connector that enables electric vehicles to be charged fully within an extremely short period of time.

At present, fast-charging stations work with an output of 50 kilowatts and charging currents of 120 amperes, resulting in charging times of up to one hour for the new generation of electric vehicles. Thanks to the new cooled cable system, charging currents of 500 amperes and higher are possible.

This promising new system is an ideal fit for high-power charging stations, which are currently still in the development stage. They will operate with an output of 400 kilowatts and charging currents of over 400 amperes for passenger cars and up to 630 amperes for heavy-duty vehicles.

HUBER+SUHNER is convinced that its system featuring a cooled cable and cooled connector plug will increase the demand for eco-friendly electric vehicles, since long charging times are still a key argument against the purchase of an electric vehicle.

Thanks to the integrated cooling these charging cables are slimmer in diameter than a petrol hose at a conventional filling station. As a result of the small diameter and ergonomic connector design, the cooled cables are flexible, lightweight and easy to handle.

HUBER+SUHNER has been granted the Bavarian State Award in the category “Energy Infrastructure & Storage” at the eCarTec 2016 Munich.
